The Exceptional Property Range of GUR(R) UHMW-PE for Orthopedic Applications - History, Current Status and Future Trends in Total Joint replacements

GUR(R) Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene has been used for artificial joints for more than 40 years. The reason for this success story is based on the extraordinary property profile of this material like wear resistance, impact trength and others. In the early days of development of total hip arthroplasty by Sir John Charnley, UHMW-PE was selected because of its far superior properties compared to e.g. PTFE or HDPE. Even today, GUR(R) UHMW-PE is the by far preferred material for artificial joints like hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle and others.

Dr. Rainer Walkenhorst joined Ticona in December 2004, working for the Technical Marketing group of GUR(R) and is now globally responsible for all medical applications of GUR UHMWPE. He studied Chemistry and received his PhD in 1995 at the University of Bielefeld, Germany in the field of Physical Chemistry of Polymers. After a post-doctoral stay in the USA until the end of 1997 he had work assignments in the fields of laboratory equipment for polymer analysis and rubber compounding before joining Ticona/GUR.
